How do I determine positve and negative on speaker wire?
How do I determine positve and negative on speaker wire? One of the strands on the 16 guage RCA speaker wire has a white stripe on one strand. Would this be positive? Help Im so confused??
Absolute polarity is generally considered inaudible but that is debatable. In a mass market system, it really probably doesn't matter so just make everything the same. Otherwise, if you can remove the grill frame and visually see the woofer then you can determine the polarity. Just use a 1.5 volt flashlight battery AA, AAA, C, D, it doesn't matter. Connect one wire to the negative end of the battery and momentarily touch the other wire to the positive end of the battery. If the woofer cone moves forward you have the positive wire on the plus end of the battery. If the cone moves backwards you have the positive wire on the negative end of the battery.
Edit: Oops sorry, I didn't read closely enough, thought you were talking about determining the polarity of a wire coming out of an existing speaker. The wire is not polarized so you get to choose which is + and -. The wire just uses different colors or a stripe or lettering to make it easier to make sure you get it the same at both ends.
