New Accessories Make Setting Up Multi-Channel Audio Kits A Breeze
Setting up multi-channel audio such as a home theater system has always been relatively difficult and vendors recently have created unique products and technologies including wireless speaker kit products or virtual surround sound to help simplify this procedure. I will look at a few of the products and technologies that have emerged and give some advice about choosing suitable components for a hassle-free setup.
Most of recent TVs will be installed as a multi-channel audio system. Whereas historically TVs would come with built-in stereo loudspeakers, these days a number of external loudspeakers are used to allow the viewer experience surround sound. While the traditional 5.1 format requires 6 speakers: a front center, two front side speakers, two rear speaker and a subwoofer, the more recent 7.1 format adds two additional side speakers.
As a result, home theater installations have turn out to be fairly difficult. Running cables to remote speakers also is often undesirable due to aesthetic reasons. Part suppliers have designed various technologies to simplify the setup.
The first option is referred to as virtual surround sound. This option will take the audio components which would normally be broadcast by the remote speakers. It then applies signal processing to those components and inserts special cues and phase delays. Next these components are mixed with the front speaker sound. The signal processing is designed according to how the human hearing determines the location of a sound. The sound signal is then broadcast through the front speakers. The signal processing has an effect that will trick the listener into presuming that the audio is coming from a different location.
Virtual surround eliminates the remote speakers and simplifies the installation and also eliminates long speaker cable runs. On the other hand, it also has a downside. The shape of each human's ear is somewhat different. As a result everybody processes sound in a different way. The signal processing is based on measurements which are done using a standard human ear model. If the shape of the ear changes, sound will travel in a different way. For that reason virtual surround will not function equally well for every person.
A different option for avoiding long speaker cable runs is to utilize wireless surround sound kits or wireless speakers. A wireless kit includes a transmitter and one or several wireless amplifiers. The transmitter connects to the source. The wireless amplifiers connect to the remote speakers. This transmitter will normally provide line-level in addition to amplified speaker inputs. Ideally it should have a volume control to adjust it to the audio source.
Some wireless products have wireless amplifiers that connect to two speakers. This still requires cable runs between the two loudspeakers. Other products offer separate wireless amplifiers for each speaker. Entry-level wireless kits use FM broadcast or audio compression which will deteriorate the audio quality to some degree. More advanced wireless kits make use of uncompressed digital audio transmission. To make sure that all loudspeakers are in sync in a multi-channel application, be sure that you select a wireless system that has an audio latency of a few milliseconds at most. A high latency would lead to an echo effect. This effect would degrade the surround effect. Most wireless products operate in the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands. A number of products utilize the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band and therefore have less competition from other wireless gadgets.
Another option are side-reflecting loudspeakers. These products are also named sound bars. There are additional speakers positioned at the front which broadcast the audio for the remote speakers from the front at an angle. The sound is then reflected by walls and appears to be originating from besides or behind the viewer. This method works best in a square room with minimum interior design and obstacles. It will not function well in many real-world scenarios with different room shapes however.
